It was a real pleasure to meet this young lady. Not only because she is the first asian tattoomodel that I had the pleasure to shoot, not even because she's one of the most photogenic dolls I ever had before my lens, but I really appreciated the person behind this pretty face... Present yourself:

I’m Mimi Darko, 21 and I live in Cologne since last year. I am currently enrolled as a student of media informatics and I job a little here and there. The last 2 years I stood regularly before the camera and have already mastered one or another modeling job.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to travel, that’s why I’m traveling a lot. In the recent months, I've also started to travel not only in Germany but also in Europe. On the road I also like to get some new ink when I have the occasion to get an appointment with a good artist. Otherwise, I like to relax, while watching series, draw, if I find time or to go out with friends.

When and how did you get your first tattoo?

I got my first tattoo at 17 - 3 months before my 18th birthday - at the Tattoo Expo in Saarbrücken. Although I had the idea for some time already, the reaction was then rather spontaneous, because I found the lettering of the tattoo artist great. Tattoos have always fascinated me, even as a young girl I liked to see shows or documentaries about tattoos. I seriously started getting tattooed when I was 19, when I lived in Berlin. I got inked at least once a month, there were just too many good opportunities to get new art on my skin.

Do you have a favorite tattoo? If so, which one and why?

Difficult, because I really like the idea to consider everything as a whole, one great work of art that has been created by many different artists.

If I really had to pick one, it would be my chestpiece. It was my first really big and especially visible tattoo. The peacock is a proud and beautiful animal, especially for me. It reminds me to believe in myself and to have self-confidence. Then, it was relatively quickly followed my other tattoos, it was the start and also the encouragement to begin my lifetime achievement.

What do you think of the current tattoo trend?

I think it's good that tattoos have become more socially acceptable and, for the most part, accepted. Still, I find it alarming that many people are not aware that tattoos are a choice for life. Especially if you don’t want to be completely tattooed, the individual tattoo is even more significant. Or if directly visible locations, such as the neck, hands, or even the face are pretty much the first places chosen to get tattooed by the youngsters. The business of laser removal is currently booming more than ever, but you should consider each tattoo well, despite of such possibilities. I’ve always known that I wanted to be tattooed over a large and visible area, because it’s one of my life dreams and that’s also why I bear the consequences, as for instance the difficulty about the job search.

Es war mir eine sehr grosse Freude, diese junge Dame kennenzulernen. Nicht nur weil sie das erste asiatische Tattoo-Model ist, das ich geshootet habe, auch nicht mal, weil sie einer der photogensten Puppen ist, die mir jeh vor die Linse kam, sondern weil mir der Mensch hinter diesem schönen Gesicht sehr gut gefallen hat. Danke für deine liebe Art, Mimi. Ich hoffe wir sehen uns bald wieder ;-)

Stell dich kurz vor:

Ich, Mimi Darko, bin 21 Jahre alt und wohne seit letztem Jahr in Köln. Zurzeit bin ich als Studentin der Medieninformatik eingeschrieben und jobbe hier und da ein wenig. Seit 2 Jahren stehe ich regelmäßig vor der Kamera und habe schon den ein oder anderen Modeljob gemeistert.

Was machst du am Liebsten in deiner Freizeit?

Ich reise gerne und bin viel unterwegs. In den letzten Monaten habe ich auch angefangen, nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern auch in Europa zu reisen. Unterwegs lasse ich mir auch gerne mal ein Tattoo stechen, wenn ich einen Termin bei einem guten Artist bekomme. Ansonsten schaue ich gerne abends entspannt Serien, zeichne, wenn es die Zeit zulässt oder gehe mal mit Freunden aus.

Wann und wie bist du zum Tattoo gekommen?

Mein erstes Tattoo habe ich mit 17, 3 Monate vor meinem 18. Geburtstag auf der Tattoo Expo in Saarbrücken bekommen. Die Idee stand zwar schon länger, die Umsetzung war dann doch eher spontan, weil ich die Letterings des Tätowierers toll fand. Ich fand Tätowierungen schon immer faszinierend, schon als junges Mädchen habe ich gerne Sendungen oder Dokumentationen über Tattoos geschaut. Richtig losgelegt habe ich aber erst mit 19, als ich in Berlin gewohnt habe. Da habe ich mich jeden Monat mindestens einmal unter die Nadel gelegt, es gab einfach viel zu viele gute Möglichkeiten, neue Kunstwerke auf der Haut zu sammeln.

Hast du ein Lieblingstattoo? Wenn ja, welches und warum?

Schwierig, da ich eigentlich alles als ein großes Kunstwerk betrachte, dass von vielen verschiedenen Artists geschaffen wurde.

Wenn ich konkret eines benennen müsste, wäre es mein Chestpiece. Es war mein erstes wirklich großes und vor allem sichtbares Tattoo. Der Pfau ist für mich ein stolzes und vor allem schönes Tier. Er erinnert mich daran, an mich selbst zu glauben und Vertrauen in mich zu haben. Danach sind auch relativ schnell meine anderen Tattoos gefolgt, er war mein Startschuss und gleichzeitig auch Mutmacher, mein Lebenswerk zu beginnen.

Was hälst du vom aktuellen Tattoo Trend?

Ich finde es gut, dass Tattoos immer gesellschaftsfähiger werden und größtenteils akzeptiert werden. Dennoch finde ich es bedenklich, dass viele sich nicht wirklich darüber im Klaren sind, dass Tattoos eine Entscheidung fürs Leben sind. Gerade, wenn man sich nicht komplett tätowieren lassen will, fallen die einzelnen noch mehr ins Gewicht. Oder wenn direkt sichtbare Stellen wie Hals, Hände oder sogar das Gesicht so ziemlich als erstes tätowiert werden in jungen Jahren. Das Geschäft mit der Laserentfernung boomt zurzeit sehr, dennoch sollte man sich trotz solcher Möglichkeiten jedes Tattoo vorher gut überlegen. Ich wusste schon früh, dass ich mich großflächig und auch sichtbar tätowieren lassen will, weil das einer meiner Lebensträume ist und dass ich die Konsequenzen dafür auch trage, wie etwa die erschwerte Jobsuche.
